Why do affiliate marketers fail?

Every affiliate marketer when gets into the business of affiliate marketing has only one objective – to make money.

Unfortunately, most affiliate marketers fail to make any money and quit after a while. Most of them don’t really quit forever – they just go into a temporary hiatus and then try with something else.

Most fail again!

The obvious question is – Why do affiliate marketers fail?

Once you understand the reasons why most affiliate marketers fail, you can take steps to ensure that you do not repeat the same mistakes.

Let’s look at the main reasons:

Affiliate Marketing Mindset

Many affiliate marketers are attracted by the marketing pitches of the gurus of affiliate marketing and begin to believe that making money in this business is quick and easy. This almost certainly leads to disappointment. While it is possible to earn a living, even a good living through affiliate marketing, it is just like any other business requiring consistent work.

Even before you start affiliate marketing, you will need to create a mindset of a business owner. You will need to accept that it will take effort to set yourself up as an affiliate marketer, and then it will take consistent work to build your business. It may take some time before you begin to see any returns, so, you will need to think like a business owner and stay focused.

Not having a good Niche

Here are some of the most common niches that most affiliate marketers are attracted towards –

Health and Fitness

Weight loss

Dating and Relationships

Pets

Beauty

Making Money on internet

Self Help

All of the above niches are very wide and general. On top of that, they are all very competitive with thousands of well-established marketers already in the market. A new affiliate has very little chance of succeeding in these general niches.

A good niche has to be more specific than a general category. More specific your niche is, more chances of your being successful.

Not staying focused

Most new affiliate marketers lose patience quite early in the game. After launching a website and some articles with affiliate links, they expect quick results. This normally does not happen. Most affiliate marketers lose their focus and are quickly attracted to the next shining objects, jumping from one niche to another, using different marketing platforms and tools.

Unfortunately, they do not give enough time, attention or effort to their selected niche and get no results. Staying focussed is one of the keys for getting any success with affiliate marketing.

Not planning

Not having a good marketing plan, and not working towards it is another one of the top reasons for the failure in affiliate marketing.

Many affiliate marketers believe that simply having a website, or simply advertising on Facebook etc. is enough to create affiliate commissions. This is a misconception.

Simply having a website with no traffic will not result in sales. Similarly, simply advertising on Facebook etc. will not lead to net profits. Just as a note, even the most successful affiliate marketers who earn commissions by advertising on Facebook, do not make more than 20% to 30% net profit on the sales revenue. So, if you see someone posting thousand dollar per day commission on Clickbank, remember that it may have taken many thousands of dollars in advertising to get to that figure, and their net profit rarely exceeds 30% on annual basis.

Hoping that someone else will make them money

This is another one of the hidden reasons why most affiliate marketers fail.

Affiliate marketers who get convinced that by joining a successful affiliate marketer is enough to make money, usually fail. Affiliate marketing is a business, just like any other business. Unless you attain some kind of knowledge and expertise in online marketing, you will tend to lose money – not make money.

It is therefore important to gain knowledge and then do at least a few of the things yourself. Experience is gained through ‘doing’ things. Getting dazzled by promises is one of the top reasons why affiliate marketers fail.

Conclusions:

Avoid failure by creating the right mindset, planning carefully, working consistently and learning on an ongoing basis. Don’t expect overnight profits. Treat affiliate marketing like any other business and establish yourself slowly but surely.
